How Can You Plan for Emergency Travel Changes?

Travel Planning

In recent days we have seen the sad news of the Costa Concordia that rolled over in the Mediterranean.

The passengers who got off had nothing.

  • No identification
  • No passports
  • No money
  • No medicine
  • No personal belongings
  • No cell phones
  • No list of phone numbers
  • No credit cards.

I’m sure this list doesn’t cover everything they needed. So, what would they do?

Were they prepared for these travel changes?

Did they buy travel insurance?

If they did, what coverage do they have in this extreme situation?

Do they know who to contact?   Many people never read their policies or take copies with them and leave a copy at home with a trusted person.

When I travel…

I have a small fold-up wallet with a neck strap that is with me at all times. It is easy to carry and has all my personal information, credit cards, money and even a place for my cell phone.

Now I am thinking of putting a days supply of medicine in one of the several zipper pockets.   Even on a cruise ship when my purse is in the safe, this wallet is on me except in the shower!!

I keep this under my clothes when I go through security, if they don’t do body scans.  If they do scans, I put it in my carry on as it goes through the xray machine.

  • If I am alone, I watch that bag and go through AFTER the bag goes.
  • If I am with someone, one of us goes with the bags and the other comes after.
  • It is a tricky situation to be constantly watching your bags.

Weather Related Flight Delays

Now is the time for weather related flight delays.  We are seeing them here this week.  So, are you planning ahead for this during the winter?

Always go a day prior to when you must be at your destination.

You purchase airline tickets weeks and maybe months ahead of your trip and you don’t know for sure what will happen.  It’s comforting to have a one day buffer because you know you can try to get other flights and still be on time.

Always remember to be very nice and polite to the reservation person when trying to rebook.  That has gotten us upgrades more than once.

Happy and safe travels.
